Fungicide containing the biological agent strain of Bacillus pumilus QST 2808 for the control of powdery mildew in rural and greenhouse crops.
The strain of Bacillus pumilus QST 2808 forms a natural barrier between spores and fungi. The bacterium then colonizes the fungal spores. An amino sugar, which occurs during fermentation, inhibits the synthesis of the cell wall in fungi leading to the destruction and eventual death of the pathogen cells. In addition, bacterial cells effectively compete with pathogens for space and nutrients, especially when nutrients are scarce, such as on leaf surfaces. Also, the bacterium B. pumilus QST 2808 can induce in plants systemic acquired resistance, as a result of which the plants become more resistant to a variety of pathogens.
