Biological control of tobacco (Capnodis tenebrionis) with the insect pathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae

Biological cycle
Smoky (Capnodis tenebrionis) is one of the most important
enemies of stone fruits in the Mediterranean region (peaches, plums,
apricots, cherries, etc.). It affects both the root system and the trunk
of trees. The total duration of his biological cycle is 13 months. Adults
females lay eggs from June to August around the trees. The
larvae migrate to the root system and create arcades in the
its interior during autumn and winter. In August
young adults emerge and feed on leaves. Adults overwinter in the ground
and reappear in April for the next spawning cycle.

Application
Nemastar is an effective product against all its stages
smoky, including acne resulting from nymphing.
It is applied through the drip irrigation or wetting of the soil
April / May and September / October, when the soil moisture is
high. The recommended dose is 1-3 ml of nematodes / tree
applied to at least 30 liters of water. For best results, water
before and after application with 30 liters of water each tree.

Effectiveness
The nemastar has been used with great success on thousands of acres
orchards in Spain. Efficacy in field tests on apricots
ranged from 75-90%, regardless of the method of application. For long term
suppression of the enemy is deemed necessary to be implemented for three consecutive years.
